Snacking does not need to be unhealthy! As long as you make sure that all 3 macronutrients are present and in the appropriate portion size, there is nothing wrong with snacking. Here’s how to put macros based snacks together.
While being stuck at home during this quarantine, I’ve decided to get a little creative with my snacks. Don’t have anywhere to go but you still want to make a meat, cheese, and veggie platter? I’m all about it. Want to make a rainbow out of a blood orange and hard boiled eggs? Let’s do it! The only guideline is to make sure that what you are going to consume is nutritionally balanced. Are you unsure of how to do this? I’ve got you, here’s how to put macros based snacks together.
The Macros Based Snacking Approach
All you need to do is ask yourself 3 questions:
- What’s my protein option?
- What’s my carbohydrate option?
- What’s my fat option?
It’s that simple, now let’s look at a couple of examples using the macros based snacking approach.
Example 1: meat, cheese, and veggie platter
3 slices of deli turkey meat
1 slice of cheddar cheese
1 slice of havarti cheese
½ of a cucumber, sliced
7 cherry tomatoes
10 baby carrots
Now, let’s look at the same platter with the macros based snacking approach:
Example 2: blood orange and hard-boiled egg rainbow
1 blood orange, separated
2 hard-boiled eggs, sliced in half
Once again, let’s look at the same platter with the macros based snacking approach:
