There are so many phrases, fads and influencers in the nutrition world! Too many, if you want my honest opinion. You’ve definitely heard the term macros thrown around, but do you know what that actually means? Possibly not, so if you’ve ever wondered what are macros? Let me fill you in.
After working in the fitness industry for quite some time, I learned how impactful the roles of macros are to the body and how you can receive the results that you want. BUT, it doesn’t end there. There are so many health complications and disease states that macros can assist with, this includes: Diabetes, fatty liver, kidney disease, high cholesterol, high triglycerides, heart disease, obesity, malnutrition, maldigestion, malabsorption, etc. Before we get ahead of ourselves, let’s go over the basics and discuss what are macros? Fun fact: yes, tacos are more than allowed in macros balanced diet. 🙂
What Are Macros?
Macros is the short word for macronutrients, which is an umbrella term for the three nutrients we need to consume regularly to sustain life. The three macronutrients consist of carbohydrates, protein, and fat. So now that we know what macros are, let’s talk about their different roles in the body and why ALL THREE are important to regularly consume.
THE ROLE OF EACH MACRONUTRIENT IN THE BODY
Each macronutrient has a different role in the body, so it’s essential to consume a balance of all 3 to receive their benefits and for your body to function properly.
- Carbohydrates – the preferable energy source for every single cell in your body. Fun fact: how many cells do you have in your body? Trillions.
- Protein – helps build and maintain muscle, cartilage, and tissue. It’s a component of our skin, hair, nails and bones. Synthesizes hormones and enzymes. Can be used as a backup energy source to carbohydrates.
- Fat – remember those trillions of cells? Fat makes up the outer membrane of ALL of those cells. They are carriers for fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, and K). A component of many physiological functions in the body. They are broken down as energy last when consuming a meal, therefore, this macronutrient keeps you full for a longer period of time.
